How To Make Kale Chips

Are you interested in learning how to make kale chips?   Have your friends been telling you that you have to try these yummy things and you are like …eeks! no way! I will admit that I was a bit skeptical when I started to hear about Kale chips too.

I mean I enjoy eating cooked Kale, but a Kale chip? really?? Hmmmmm….

Well, we finally took the plunge and made some Kale chips over the weekend and WOW! they were really good. (and easy to make too). Here is what we did:
How to make Kale chips

Ingredients:

  • Bag of Trader Joe’s Kale (near all the bags of lettuce)
  • Olive Oil
  • Sea Salt

How to Make Kale Chips:
1. Turn oven to 400 degrees
2. Line a baking sheet with foil and spread out the Kale in a thin layer (we only used about 1/3 of the bag). Check the leafs for the tough stems, and tear them out, so you are left with only the “tender” kale leafs.
3. Lightly drizzle olive oil over the leafs and toss around so they are lightly coated. Next time I am thinking of using some Trader Joe’s Olive Oil pan spray to get a more even and yet still light coating of oil on the Kale.

4. Bake for 20-40 minutes. I would check the Kale at 20 minutes and then every 10 minutes after that. The Kale should be dry and crisp (It will shrink up and get dark when it is ready).
5. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with Sea Salt.
Let them cool slightly and then enjoy!

We enjoyed them and finished off the pan rather quickly… so we made more!

So now you know how to Make Kale Chips! They are fast and easy and are as addicting as Potato chips in my opinion…

    Kris,

I am only going to say this once so listen carefully. DO NOT EAT AN ENTIRE PAN OF KALE CHIPS BY YOURSELF. I did this for dinner on Wednesday night and woah. Let’s just say Kale and Broccoli must be from the same family.

I make kale chips regularly. I toss them around every 10 minutes or so to get them to cook evenly. They are also good with other flavorings added, such as Old Bay Seasoning. Once I made them on the grill by putting them on greased foil. They were yummy but take a lot of attention to avoid burning.

I love the idea of Kale on the Grill! I may give that a try next time I fire up ~ Thanks for sharing 🙂 Kristin

I add Nutritional Yeast to mine. It gives them a bit of a Parmesan cheese flavor. Just sprinkle it on after you have added the olive oil but before putting them in the oven. You can buy Nutritional Yeast at most health food stores.

thank you Laurel for that! I was wondering how to get that cheesy taste. Does anyone know what effects (good or bad) the nutritional yeast adds?

Kale and broccoli must be from the same family you say ? Kale is “ancient broccoli”! Some bodies react differently with various vegtables and foods. I can eat tonnnnsss of kale everything and it has no effect. Then i can eat a small amount of red cabbage and im done for!

Oh… i use the artificial yellow cheese sprinkles and parmesan powdered cheese. I find the combination to be the best. I also use them and just a tiny dash of celery salt rather than regular sea salt.

I always use nutritional yeast, but blended with cashews and himalayan salt. Kale chips in the dehydrator this way is amazing!! I always use Trader Joes but pull out the big stem pcs and spray with evoo prior to mixing. Delish!!

I’ve been cooking these for an hour with no results, because the recipe printed on the bag of Trader Joe’s Tuscan Organic Kale says to set the oven to 200 DEGREES. So what I have is warm, raw kale.

No harm done; having found this site I increased it to 400. Hey, TJ, you might want to fix those bags for the next print run.

I have tried making these a couple of times. I use organic kale though because it is on the EWG’s dirty dozen list. I also enjoy parmesan cheese as a seasoning along with chipolte powder. 🙂

I usually just season with salt, but now will try your suggestion of parm cheese and chipolte powder ~ Fantastic!

I love kale chips! I mix my olive oil with 2 cubes of the TJ’s frozen garlic cubes and then shake everything up in a big covered bowl so the kale is evenly covered. After I put them out on the baking sheets (I make 2 at once) I sprinkle them with Vege-Sal (a seasoned salt), fresh ground pepper, and a generous amount of nutritional yeast. I bake them for about 20 minutes at 425 degrees. Delicious!!!
