Trader Joe's Giant White Beans

Recently while shopping at Trader Joe’s, this little item caught our eye. I love how Trader Joe’s arranges all their “new stuff” on an end cap, so that you can check there and find new items. Sometimes we seem to be in a rut and like to check out the new items for something different so I like to know there is a section where we can go and look and see what is new. But who am I kidding, we shop at Trader Joe’s on a weekly basis, and I am always seeing new stuff when I look in other people’s baskets.

Anyway, back to these beans. They looked interesting, especially the part at the bottom of the label that noted that they were made from a “Traditional Greek Recipe” –hmmmm had to think for a sec…wait….SOLD! We just LOVE Greek food.

So the label says they are Giant White Beans, right? Well, that really was NOT a joke – They are HUGE! I was going to measure them, but they were soo good that after the first taste, I just forgot and continued to eat my way through my dish-sorry.

We served these beans for two meals- we can’t believe that we did not gobble down the whole jar on the first day, looking back. Anyway we served them first alongside a simple salad, so that we could really get the flavor.

The second time, a few days later, we mixed the remaining beans and their yummy sauce with a can of drained tuna fish and made a Greek- Tuna mixture that we ate also with a salad.

We thought these beans were just terrific and we enjoyed eating them the two different ways. These beans would be a nice addition to a “Tapas” night assortment of cheese, olives and breads to add some nice flavors.

We hope you try them next time you are at Trader Joe’s looking for something different.

These beans remind me of “butter beans” that we had in Ireland. These ones are delicious! Highly recommended.

I love these beans – I just heat up the whole jar and dip a nice piece of crusty bread in the sauce. Had that for lunch today!

Olive Bars in the grocery stores offer giant white beans in olive oil and a bit of chopped green and maybe sun dried tomato bits…$9.99#!!++ Sounds like I just found my less expensive replacement. Can’t wait to try them.

Trader Joe’s Giant White Bean Salad.
Have been enjoying these for awhile… this is what I did today. Took a bag of chopped butter lettuce and put about 4 cups in a salad bowl… sprinkled with olive oil.
All this stuff is from TJ’s by the way.
1 cup of gem tomato’s, sliced in half.
1/2 half cup of corn kernels
1/2 half cup of black olives sliced in half.
1/2 jar of Tj’s Giant White Beans
Fresh Thyme and Basil. Roll the basil and slice, you get ribbons. Sprinkle with balsamic vinegar. Toss lightly and well. It was so good with grilled lamb chops and roasted potato’s. Can think of many variations… hope someone makes this and enjoys it too. ;o)

I was SO disappointed to find that these are no longer being carried at the Saugus, MA store on Rt. 1. Are they still being carried at other stores? I just love them with crackers and cheese and some of your other tapas.

I asked about this at my Trader Joe’s in Kansas City and I was told it was being discontinued also. Too bad -they were really tasty!

This is an old post, 2011 and alas, Trader Joe’s has discontinued these beans. I really want to make a knock off since we can no longer buy them at TJ’s but I have not been able to find the ingredient list. Does anyone have a jar sitting around, empty most likely, with the ingredient list still intact? I would greatly appreciate the list so I can try to reverse engineer the recipe. Thanks much!
